Company Background
Transformer Manufacturers commenced business during June 1981 manufacturing mainly mine
lighting transformers, medium size distribution & special applications transformers for furnaces,
pressure testing sets and electrified fences.
The company evolved from the acquisition and merger of two SABS mark holding companies
which were in the Hubert Davies group. These were The Reef Electrical & General Engineering
Co and Sema Electrical. In 1979 Hubert Davies who already owned Reef Electrical, purchased
Sema Electrical which had started business in 1966 manufacturing current & voltage transformers
resin cast up to 11 kV and 33 kV oil immersed, in addition to distribution transformers under the
SABS mark up to 3150 kVA, 33 kV and merged it with Reef Electrical to form one single company
producing transformers under the SABS mark with the trade name of Reef-Sema.
The purchase of Sema Electrical was deemed vital by Hubert Davies in order to rejuvenate the
outdated technology of Reef Electrical and therefore endeavor to regain lost competitiveness.
During 1981 two managers and the former Managing Director of Sema Electrical whose
experience in the design of the above plant amounted to over 40 years, broke away from Hubert
Davies and formed Transformer Manufacturers (Pty) Ltd.

manufacture and service an extensive range of electromagnetic plant of medium range amongst which are,Transformers up to 10 MVA, 33 kV, Reactors, Neutral Electromagnetic Couplers, Mini subs and Units for special applications. Due to the acquisition in 2004 of a fully equipped Transformer Servicing Company, Transformer Manufacturers is now able to offer complete service and refurbishment of transformers and switchgear, including, on site purification and regeneration of insulation oil.
In July 2008 Mr Protus Sokhela acquired further shareholding, therefore qualifying Transformer
Manufacturers (Pty) Ltd as a Black Owned Company, with a scorecard rating of Level 2
